Next steps for energy storage in the UK: investment, innovation and policy priorities

Sessions will examine investment priorities for the storage market as well as opportunities for improving access to private finance for current, new and alternative battery technologies in light of the joint BEIS and Ofgem Smart systems and flexibility plan for developing a new energy system, and the Government’s announcement on the £246 million Faraday Challenge investment in battery technology.

Delegates will also discuss the latest developments in storage technologies for both domestic and grid-scale use, the key challenges for DNOs in reinforcing local grids, and the growing role of battery ownership in coping with increasing energy demand.

Overall, areas for discussion include:
• Opportunities and challenges for investment in UK energy storage technology and the practicalities of expanding storage capacity;
• Encouraging new projects with pioneering technology - and addressing commercial, legal and planning challenges for emerging and existing projects;
• Modernising the regulatory framework - developing a smart and flexible system;
• Developments in commercial-scale on-site storage to help manage consumption and transmission;
• Latest on domestic storage and smart technology to offset demand and reduce emissions;
• Case studies for developing large-scale solutions and integrating storage into the grid; and
• Policy priorities for creating a fully integrated energy storage network.
